This is Sophia just before she decided to journey on. Cancer was the culprit. Her mama, my dear friend Naomi, was an ocean away and couldn’t say proper goodbyes. I offered to take a few snaps of Sophia for her, as macabre as it seemed at first.
At first.
Since Sophia, I’ve made candid, silly and emotional portraits of many beloved pets, some of them to say goodbye, some who were old or sick but still vibrant, and some just for the hell of it.
And I loved, loved, loved all of it. These sessions highlight my skills and love of animals in a way that brings me joy and serves others, too.
I’d love to do more sessions with animals.
So if you’re reading this and thinking, “I kinda want some pictures with my pets, is that weird?” I’m here to say, no, it’s not weird at all. They are your damn family.
